Consultations are by appointment only and can be booked in person, over the phone and by using our online booking service. The duty doctor will always see you the same day for emergency medical attention.
The duty doctor is available for both morning and evening consultations. These appointments are for acute problems and are shorter in length. They are NOT suitable for on going problems. An appointment time is given, although this is only a guide. Please be patient as you may not always be seen straight away and may have to wait if the doctor has an emergency to deal with.
Please let us know as soon as possible if you are unable to keep your appointment so that we can offer it to someone else.
Our reception team of 11 have a difficult task as they have to balance the needs of the patients and doctors. They try to keep the practice running smoothly and to do this they may sometimes need to ask for details of your illness. This information is treated in the strictest confidence as they are bound by the same rules of confidentiality as the doctors
CONSENT TO SEE MEDICAL STUDENTS
Wickham Surgery is involved in teaching medical students from the University of Southampton.
Students learn a huge amount from talking to patients and thinking about diagnoses and management. You have a lot to teach them. The student may observe the consultation, lead the consultation while being observed by the GP or talk to you alone and then present your story to the GP.
The students are bound by the same rules of confidentiality as all members of the practice and their code of conduct is set out clearly by the General Medical Council. The student will not be able to make any decision about your care independently. Your problem will always be reviewed by a qualified practitioner.
If you do not want a student present please tell the receptionist, nurse or doctor, we completely respect this decision and the doctor or nurse will be happy to see you alone.
If you are happy to let the student be involved in the consultation please let the doctor know.
Thank you for your cooperation.
